What is a corporate action?
A corporate action is a decision by a listed company that changes its shares or returns value to shareholders. The common ones in India are dividends (a cash payout per share), bonus issues (free additional shares), stock splits (each share subdivided into more shares), rights issues (existing shareholders offered new shares at a set price), buybacks (the company repurchasing its own shares), and mergers or demergers (a restructuring of the company itself). Every one of them is announced to NSE and BSE before it takes effect, and each carries an ex-date that decides who is eligible.
What is an ex-date, and why does it matter?
The ex-date is the first day a share trades WITHOUT the entitlement to a corporate action. To be eligible you must already own the shares when the ex-date begins, which in practice means buying at least one trading day earlier. Buying on the ex-date itself does not qualify you — Indian equities settle on a T+1 basis, so a trade placed on the ex-date is only registered the following day. If you sell on or after the ex-date you still keep the entitlement, because you held the shares when it was determined.
What is the difference between the ex-date and the record date?
The record date is the day the company looks at its shareholder register to decide who gets paid. The ex-date is the market-side consequence of that: it is set so that anyone buying on or after it will not appear on the register in time. Under T+1 settlement the two are usually the same day or one business day apart. For planning eligibility the ex-date is the one to watch, because it is the date your own buy or sell decision has to beat.
What happens to the share price on the ex-date?
The price adjusts downward to reflect the value leaving the company or the increase in share count. For a dividend the fall is roughly the dividend per share. For a bonus or split the price falls proportionally — after a 1:1 bonus each share is worth about half as much, but you hold twice as many, so the value of your holding is broadly unchanged. Exchanges adjust the previous close for these events, which is why a large ex-date drop is not a real loss and should not be read as one.
What is the difference between a bonus issue and a stock split?
Both increase the number of shares you hold and reduce the price proportionally, but they work differently. A bonus issue creates new shares out of the company reserves and hands them to existing shareholders free — the face value per share does not change. A stock split subdivides the existing shares by cutting the face value, for example from ₹10 to ₹1, turning one share into ten. No reserves are used in a split. Both are usually done to make a high-priced share more accessible to smaller investors.
How do I read a bonus, rights or split ratio?
A bonus or rights ratio is written as new:old — a 2:1 bonus means two additional shares for every one you already hold, and a 7:40 rights issue offers seven new shares for every forty held. A split is shown here as a direction, such as 1 → 10, meaning one existing share becomes ten. Splits are displayed that way on purpose: exchange filings describe them by face value ("from ₹10 to ₹1") rather than by share count, and stating the direction removes any doubt about which way round the change goes.
What is a rights issue, and do I have to subscribe?
A rights issue lets existing shareholders buy new shares at a fixed price, usually below the market price, in proportion to what they already hold. You are not obliged to take it up. You can subscribe in full or part, renounce your entitlement to somebody else, or let it lapse. Rights entitlements trade separately on the exchange for a short window before the issue closes. Letting them lapse means your stake in the company gets diluted by the new shares that others buy.
What is a share buyback?
A buyback is a company repurchasing its own shares from shareholders, either through a tender offer at a fixed price or by buying on the open market. It reduces the number of shares outstanding, which raises earnings per share on the same profit. In a tender offer, shareholders on the register as of the record date can offer their shares in a set proportion, and the company accepts them up to the size of the buyback.
Why do some events show a dash instead of a value?
Because no figure has been published for them. Merger and demerger terms are a scheme of arrangement rather than a single number, and most buyback announcements state the price only in the offer document rather than in the exchange filing that carries the ex-date. Where a figure is not on record this calendar shows a dash instead of a substitute, since a plausible-looking wrong number would be worse than an honest gap.
How often is this corporate actions calendar updated?
Daily. Ex-dates, record dates and announcement dates are refreshed every day as companies file with NSE and BSE, and the calendar covers events from 2018 onward as well as everything scheduled ahead. Dates are as announced and can be revised by the company or the exchange, so it is worth re-checking an ex-date close to the day it falls.
